Self-evaluating sustainability

Sustainable Tourism in Geoparks

Certifications are a mechanism to measure sustainability in tourism; however, they are often not aimed at smaller businesses, and the cost of undergoing a certification process is too costly.

To measure sustainable tourism practices in the region of the Geopark of Burren and Cliffs of Moher, the Geopark contracted P4P to create measurable criteria and an online system that would facilitate tracking and keeping history for comparative purposes.

P4P focused on identifying critical criteria that would align with European requirements and the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria. The technical solutions were concentrated in both tracking key indicators as well as conducting evaluations of progress. It allowed for the upload of proof and community exchange of information.

P4P also conducted the first two evaluations to test the process, adapt it, and provide feedback to participants.
